Don’t Complain, Don’t Explain: Choosing Peace Over Justification

There’s a chapter in my book Becoming Her: A Journey Back to Myself titled “Don’t Complain, Don’t Explain.” Yesterday, while on TikTok live, I had the honor of reading a few excerpts to my community, and the feedback reminded me that this truth is worth revisiting.
We live in a world where the urge to over-explain ourselves feels constant. Social media pressures us to justify our choices. Family and friends sometimes expect us to defend our boundaries. And if we’re not careful, complaining becomes the default language when life doesn’t go as planned.
But here’s what I’ve learned on my own journey: peace doesn’t require explanation, and strength doesn’t thrive in constant complaint.
Why Complaining Weakens You
Complaining feels good in the moment—it gives us a release, a sense of validation. But over time, it erodes gratitude, magnifies what’s wrong, and keeps us stuck in the very situations we’re trying to escape. Complaining is like rehearsing pain, replaying it over and over until it becomes your soundtrack.
When I stopped rehearsing my disappointments and started rehearsing my gratitude, my perspective shifted. Things I thought were “in the way” became steppingstones.
Why Explaining Drains You
Explaining ourselves often comes from a place of insecurity. It’s the subtle plea: “Please understand me so I can feel okay about my choice.” But the truth is—your choices don’t need a public jury.
When you choose not to explain, you protect your energy and your decisions. People may still misunderstand, but your peace won’t be tied to their approval.
The Power of Silent Strength
Choosing not to complain or explain isn’t about silence in the face of injustice. It’s about discernment. It’s knowing when to speak and when silence is the loudest statement.
Silent strength is rooted in trust—trust in God, trust in your growth, and trust in the path unfolding before you.
A Practical Shift You Can Try
• Next time you want to complain, pause and reframe: What can I be grateful for in this moment?
• Next time you feel the urge to explain, take a breath and affirm: My choices are valid, even if no one else understands them.
• Write it down instead of saying it out loud. Journaling helps you process without spreading negativity.
