A Chasing After the Wind: When Grief Makes You Slow Down

A Chasing After the Wind: When Grief Makes You Slow Down

By Colleeno Chippy

There are days that arrive carrying more than just a date on the calendar. They arrive carrying memory. They arrive carrying weight. They arrive carrying the soft ache of someone who should still be here.

Today is one of those days.

Ecclesiastes 2 speaks of life’s pursuits — of wealth, achievements, laughter, labour, and the endless chase for meaning — and then gently concludes that much of what we run after can feel like “a chasing after the wind.” It is a sobering reminder that the soul cannot be filled by motion alone. Some days, the heart needs more than movement. Some days, the spirit needs stillness.

Today would have been Terry-Ann Chippy’s 43rd birthday.

And suddenly, the phrase a chasing after the wind feels different.

It feels like the quiet realization that love does not leave when someone does. It feels like the truth that we can be busy, productive, and outwardly strong — yet inwardly tender and missing someone deeply. It feels like understanding that not everything meaningful can be measured by output, deadlines, or goals.

Some days, you may feel like curling up in bed, withdrawing a little, moving slower than usual. And yet, there is often something else quietly present beneath the heaviness — a soft inner nudge, a gentle stirring of gratitude, memory, and love that refuses to disappear.

Grief does not mean you are broken. It means you loved deeply.

It means your heart still remembers.

And in a world that constantly pushes us to chase, build, and prove — days like today invite us to pause. To breathe. To remember. To honor the people who shaped us, prayed for us, laughed with us, and left fingerprints on our hearts that time can never erase.

Terry-Ann’s life mattered. Her love mattered. Her presence mattered. And her memory still lives — not in noise or performance, but in quiet remembrance, gentle gratitude, and the sacred spaces of your heart.

Today is not a day for chasing.

Today is a day for honoring.

For slowing down.

For letting your soul breathe.

Because some of the most meaningful moments in life are not found in what we do —

but in who we remember, who we love, and who we carry with us.

And that is never a chasing after the wind.
