Taming the Tongue: When God Keeps Repeating the Lesson

Taming the Tongue: When God Keeps Repeating the Lesson

By Colleeno Chippy

This morning my reading came from James Chapter 3—again.

Not the first time.

Not the second time.

But the third time.

Whenever a scripture keeps circling back into my life like that, I’ve learned to pause. God doesn’t repeat Himself for no reason. If a chapter keeps finding me, it means there is something He is trying to plant deeper into my spirit.

And James 3 is all about one powerful, life-changing subject:

The tongue.

The Small Thing That Controls So Much

James reminds us that something very small can steer something very big. A tiny bit controls a horse. A small rudder directs a huge ship. And in the same way, our little tongue has the power to guide the entire direction of our lives.

That hit me hard today.

Because so often we think our words are “just words.”

We speak carelessly.

We react emotionally.

We vent without thinking.

But this chapter makes it clear:

Your tongue is not small in impact, only in size.

One sentence can build someone up.

One sentence can tear someone down.

One sentence can start healing.

One sentence can start a war.

That is a frightening – and powerful – responsibility.

Blessing and Cursing From the Same Mouth

One of the strongest parts of James 3 asks a question that challenges all of us:

How can we use the same mouth to praise God and curse people made in His image?

That line alone is enough to make anyone reflect.

We can be in prayer in the morning and gossip by noon.

We can post scriptures online and still speak harshly to our family.

We can declare blessings and then turn around and complain, criticize, and condemn.

James says it plainly: this should not be.

A spring cannot produce both fresh water and salt water.

A tree cannot bear two different kinds of fruit.

So the real issue is not just the tongue – it is the heart behind the tongue.

Wisdom Shows in How We Speak

The chapter ends by talking about true wisdom.

Real wisdom is not about sounding intelligent or winning arguments. It is shown in gentleness, humility, and peace.

Godly wisdom looks like:

Choosing kindness over being right

Speaking truth without being cruel

Responding instead of reacting

Bringing peace instead of confusion

That is the kind of wisdom I want to walk in.

And maybe that is why this chapter keeps coming back to me.

My Personal Message From God Today

After reading James 3 for the third time, my message for today is clear:

Be mindful of your words.

God is reminding me that in this season, my mouth matters.

What I speak over my life matters.

What I speak to my children matters.

What I type online matters.

What I say in moments of frustration matters.

Words create atmospheres.

They can create stress or peace.

Confidence or insecurity.

Hope or discouragement.

So today I am choosing to slow down before I speak.

To pause before I reply.

To season my words with grace.

A Prayer for Today

Lord, help me to guard my tongue.

Let my words bring life and not harm.

Teach me to speak with wisdom, patience, and love.

May everything that comes from my mouth reflect You.

Amen.

Conclusion

James 3 is not just a chapter about speech—it is a chapter about maturity.

It reminds us that spiritual growth is seen not only in how much we know, but in how well we control what we say.

If this chapter keeps finding you like it keeps finding me, maybe God is inviting us higher—into greater wisdom, gentleness, and self-control.

Today, let’s choose words that heal, encourage, and bring peace.

Because truly,

our mouths are ministries.
