Don’t Put the Cart Before the Horse
Don’t Put the Cart Before the Horse
By Colleeno Chippy
There is an old saying that goes:
“Don’t put the cart before the horse.”
And the older I get, the more I understand the wisdom in that phrase.
Because sometimes in life, we become so focused on the outcome we want that we rush ahead of the process required to sustain it.
We focus on the destination before building the foundation.
The result before the structure.
The cart before the horse.
And honestly, many people do this without even realizing it.
We become emotionally attached to an idea, a goal, a vision, and in our excitement or desperation to move forward, we start trying to build things out of order.
Not because we are foolish.
But because we want relief.
We want movement. We want change.
And when life feels uncertain, there is a temptation to rush toward what feels like security without fully asking ourselves an important question:
“Do I currently have what is needed to sustain what I’m trying to build?”
That question requires honesty. Real honesty.
Not fear-based thinking. Not negativity. Not doubting yourself.
Just awareness.
Because wisdom is not only about dreaming.
It is also about structure. Preparation. Timing.
And understanding that certain things work best in the proper order.
A horse pulls the cart. Not the other way around.
And if the foundation is weak, eventually the pressure of the outcome becomes too heavy to carry.
That is why sometimes the wiser decision is not the fastest one.
Sometimes growth requires pausing long enough to build properly.
To secure stability before adding pressure.
To strengthen income before increasing responsibility.
To create structure before trying to maintain appearances of success.
And that can feel frustrating.
Especially when you are eager to move forward.
Especially when you are tired of waiting.
But rushing ahead of your foundation can create more stress than peace.
And many people learn that lesson the hard way.
There is nothing wrong with wanting more for yourself.
Nothing wrong with vision. Nothing wrong with goals. Nothing wrong with ambition.
But ambition without structure can become anxiety.
Because now you are trying to maintain something your current reality is not yet prepared to support.
That is why self-awareness matters. The ability to pause and honestly assess:
- What season am I in?
- What should I focus on first?
- What am I trying to force prematurely?
- What foundation still needs strengthening?
Those questions are not signs of failure. They are signs of maturity.
Because real growth is not just about movement.
It is about sustainable movement.
Movement that can actually hold the weight of the life you are trying to create.
And sometimes the strongest thing you can do is stop trying to skip steps.
To stop forcing timelines. To stop building from pressure instead of preparation.
Because when things are built in order, they become stronger.
More stable. More sustainable.
So maybe the lesson is not:
“Give up on the vision.”
Maybe the lesson is:
“Build the horse first.”
Strengthen the foundation. Increase the capacity. Create the structure.
And then allow the cart to follow naturally.
Because life has a way of teaching us that timing and order matter.
Not to limit us— but to protect us from collapsing under what we were not yet prepared to carry.
