When Life Happens to You — and the World Keeps Going
When Life Happens to You — and the World Keeps Going
By Colleeno Chippy
There’s a quiet kind of pain that comes with realizing this truth:
when something happens to you, the world does not stop.
Traffic still flows. Stores still open. People still laugh. Music still plays.
And yet inside, everything feels altered.
I was watching Ripple Effect when a quote landed deeply in my spirit:
When things happen to you specifically, the world keeps going on as if nothing happened—because to everyone else, nothing did.
That realization can feel isolating. Especially during seasons like Christmas, when joy is expected, gratitude is demanded, and pain feels inconvenient.
So how do we cope when life hits us personally, but publicly, everything remains the same?
1. Accept That Your Experience Is Still Valid
One of the hardest parts of pain is feeling like you have to explain it—or minimize it—because no one else feels it the way you do.
But your grief, confusion, disappointment, or heartbreak does not need permission to exist.
Pain doesn’t require an audience to be real.
Allow yourself to feel without rushing to “be okay” for the comfort of others.
2. Stop Comparing Your Inner World to the Outer World
During the holidays, comparison becomes louder:
• Everyone looks happy.
• Everyone seems together.
• Everyone appears to be celebrating.
But what you see is curated. What you feel is real.
Your season does not have to match the calendar.
It’s okay if this Christmas looks quieter, slower, or heavier than others.
3. Create Space for Gentle Coping
Coping doesn’t always mean fixing. Sometimes it means softening.
It can look like:
• Turning down invitations without guilt
• Sitting in silence instead of forcing cheer
• Journaling your thoughts instead of explaining them
• Praying honestly, not perfectly
Coping is choosing what supports your nervous system, not what satisfies expectations.
4. Let Faith Hold You When You Can’t Hold Yourself
There are moments when words fail, answers delay, and strength feels thin.
This is where faith doesn’t remove the pain—but holds it with you.
God doesn’t rush you through grief.
He walks with you through it.
Even when the world keeps moving, heaven remains attentive.
5. Remember: This Is Not the End of Your Story
What’s happening to you right now feels all-consuming because it’s current—not because it’s permanent.
This season will not define your entire life.
One day, you will look back and realize:
you survived a chapter you once didn’t know how to live through.
If You’re Struggling This Season
If you’re reading this and quietly hurting, know this:
You are not weak for feeling this way.
You are not behind.
You are not forgotten.
The world may keep going—but you still matter.
And even now, healing is happening in ways you can’t yet see.
