Life moves in seasons. Some seasons feel light and hopeful, while others feel heavy and uncertain. Psalm 40 speaks directly to those in–between moments when faith is being stretched and patience is being tested.


This passage is a powerful reminder that God hears our cries, lifts us out of difficult places, and gives us new reasons to praise. It teaches us how to wait, how to trust, and how to remember the faithfulness of God even in the middle of new struggles.



The Power of Patient Waiting


Psalm 40 opens with the words, “I waited patiently for the Lord; He turned to me and heard my cry.” These words set the tone for the entire passage.


Waiting is one of the hardest parts of the faith journey. In a world that moves quickly, patience can feel uncomfortable and unnatural. Yet this Psalm reminds us that waiting on God is never wasted time.


While we wait, God works.

While we wait, He prepares.

While we wait, He strengthens us.

Lifted from the Pit


David describes being pulled out of a “slimy pit” and placed on solid ground. This image is deeply symbolic. The pit represents moments of fear, discouragement, confusion, grief, or hopelessness—experiences we all face at different times.

Toward the end of the Psalm, the tone shifts. After celebrating past victories, David finds himself facing new troubles and once again calls out to God for help.

Even people of strong faith need God again and again.


Growth does not mean we will never struggle. It means we know where to turn when we do.
